Gambarie is a mountain resort of Santo Stefano in Aspromonte, in the province of Reggio Calabria. It’s located at 1,350 meters above sea level, in the heart of the National Park of the Aspromonte, one of the most important protected areas in Italy for its environment , flora and fauna.
Gambarie is an important winter resort, famous for its 11 kilometers of ski runs. It’s the only ski resort in Europe that allows you to ski while admiring the sea, offering panoramic views of the Strait of Messina, the Aeolian Islands and of the Mount Etna.
Just 7 km away from the village there is the “Cippo Garibaldi”, a place where Giuseppe Garibaldi (the hero of italian unification) was injured during a battle in 1862. You can see a majestic tree characterized by a large cavity in which the companions of Giuseppe Garibaldi made him rest. There is also a small mausoleum recalling the exploits of the hero.
Then you will reach the top of Montalto - S. Salvatore, located at 1,956 meters above the sea level, which is the highest peak of the Aspromonte massif. Here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Strait of Messina the Mount Etna, the Aeolian Islands and the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas.
After lunch, tasting some typical dishes of the Aspromonte, you can go to Mount St. Elia, which is located 582 meters above sea level in the municipality of Palmi. It’s a coastal ridge of the Aspromonte massif, it’s called "the balcony on the Tyrrhenian Sea", because you can admire the Tyrrhenian coast from Capo Vaticano to the Strait of Messina, the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Aeolian Islands, the Mount Etna and the entire city of Palmi. There are three white crosses on top of the belvedere, in memory of Mount Calvary.
