Gerace, included in the list of "The most beautiful villages in Italy", is perhaps the most interesting historical centre of the whole of Calabria. It dates back to the tenth century and has maintained the original Byzantine urban structure. A guided tour will lead you to admire the imposing cathedral built the eleventh century and the Diocesan Museum, which houses the precious seventeenth-century tapestry made by Leyniers. You can also visit other important Byzantine and medieval churches and the ruins of the castle. Gerace is located on a tuff rock, overlooking all the coastline, thus the historic centre offers fascinating and very scenic views towards the sea.
After having lunch tasting the typical Calabrian cuisine in one of the many farmhouse in the area, we propose to visit the huge archaeological area of the ancient Locri Epizephiri, located in the Portigliola district, a few kilometers away from the centre of Locri. The archaeological park contains significant evidence relating to the ancient Greek and Roman city: the remains of Centocamere, the theater, the Temple of Marasà, the sanctuary of Demeter Thesmophoros, part of Greek city walls and a thermal building, known as Casino Macri Museum. The Archaeological Museum of Locri, which is located on the edge of the Marasà sacred area is rich in important finds.
Bianco is 20 km away from Locri, along the 106 State Road towards Reggio Calabria. In this village there are several wineries that produce the “Greco di Bianco” DOC wine, so you can taste this fine dessert wine, produced by a particular winemaking technology.
