Rhegion (its ancient name), was one of the oldest Greek colonies in southern Italy.
The city tour starts from Piazza Giuseppe De Nava, where is the National Museum of Magna Grecia, where you can admire many Greek artifacts including the famous Bronzi di Riace (Riace Bronzes).
These are two big statues of Greek origin which date back to the mid-fifth century BC. The Bronzes are considered a rare and splendid examples of the great bronze sculptors of ancient Greece.
At lunchtime you can taste some typical Calabrian dishes.
In this city you can admire the Aragonese Castle, one of the main medieval city fortifications. Next to the castle there is the interesting church of Ottimati; going down towards the sea you will arrive at the Cathedral of SS.ma Maria Assunta, the biggest religious building in Calabria. On the waterfront there are two archaeological sites: the Greek walls, dating back to the fourth century BC, which represent the foundations of the ancient city; the Roman baths, which are the ruins of a thermal area dating back to Roman times.
The waterfront is beautiful and filled with exotic plants, it was praised by many poets and writers, enchanted by the wonderful views of the Strait of Messina.
After the sightseeing tour of the city you have the opportunity to stroll along the Corso Garibaldi, the main street of Reggio, shopping at the most exclusive shops of the city.
