Starting from
Reggio Calabria, crossing the
Strait of Messina is a fascinating experience. The port of Messina is about 8 km away from the port of Villa San Giovann , while 3.2 kilometers separate the coasts of Calabria and Sicily in the narrowest part. After arriving in Messina, we will reach the northern side of the
Etna Park: the area of
Linguaglossa, which has also a visitor centre, offers wonderful views of the Mount Etna.
Returning to Messina, before reaching Taormina, we will go for lunch to
Giardini Naxos, which is a famous seaside resort, where you can taste the best of
Sicilian food.
Taormina is just 15 minutes away from Giardini Naxos; it is one of the most popular tourist sites of Sicily because of its historical heritage and its wonderful landscapes. A guided tour will lead you to discover the rich historical and artistic heritage of Taormina, including the famous
Greek Theatre. It dates back to the third century BC, now it hosts some cultural and international awards which take place especially during the summer.
Corso Umberto I is the main street of the historic centre, along this street there is the major part of monuments such as the
Cathedral of St. Nicholas and other religious buildings, but also many aristocratic houses.
Piazza IX Aprile is the most popular place of Taormina: it’s like a balcony overlooking the sea, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the bay and the Mount Etna. It’s also the centre of the social life of Taormina with many bars and restaurants, with the background of churches and historic buildings.
The tour ends reaching Porta Catania, which represents the edge of the historic center of Taormina.
